I’m selling off my collection of Planet magazines, as I need to create shelf space. All magazines, except the pre-1990s ones, were bought by me on subscription, have been read once (if that), and stored carefully, so are in pretty decent condition. Any that are in less sparkling condition will be noted. The Abbey Chronicle: The Journal of the Elsie Jeanette Oxenham Appreciation Society Near complete run, published quarterly, from issue 3 in 1989 through to issue 59 in 2008, lacking just number 54, so a number count of 56 separate journals. For the most part the journals are in very good condition, a couple of duplicates will be thrown in with the lot, and will be sent with 8 special Abbey Chronicle Folders. Elsie Jeanette Dunkerley (25 November 1880 – 9 January 1960), was an English girls’ story writer, who took the name Oxenham as her pseudonym when her first book, Goblin Island, was published in 1907. Her Abbey Series of 38 titles are her best-known and best-loved books. In her lifetime she had 87 titles published and another two have since been published by her niece, who discovered the manuscripts in the early 1990s. She is considered a major figure among girls’ story writers of the first half of the twentieth century, being one of the ‘Big Three’ with Elinor Brent-Dyer and Dorita Fairlie Bruce. Angela Brazil is as well-known – perhaps more so – but did not write her books in series about the same group of characters or set in the same place or school, as did the Big Three. Oxenham’s books are widely collected and there are several Appreciation Societies: in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa; with a total membership of over six hundred, some of whom live in the US, Canada, India and The Netherlands although belonging to one or more of the societies mentioned. Very Good (VG): The broadest category for used books, this describes any average used book. May have small flaws, and has probably been read, but should appear overall clean and attractive. Good (G): Will probably have significant wear or damage, although is still intact. Suitable for reading, but not necessarily a good gift copy. December 31, 1927 John O’London’s Weekly Front cover photograph and article by E. Temple Thurston. Original short story by Basil Macdonald Hastings entitled The Man Who Concealed His Address. Features on Henry Irving written by Dame Ellen Terry, and much more. Full of great book reviews, and features on authors. These superb old magazines are illustrated throughout. Condition; One small piece removed. General ageing to covers (See Pic). Internally still in very good condition for age. John O’London’s Weekly was a literary and arts publication that was published by George Newnes of London between 1919 and 1954. It was then briefly brought back into circulation in 1960. Regarded as the leading literary magazine in the British Empire, its content featured the most famous authors of the day and many lesser known writers. Contributors included Winston Churchill, H.E.
